WORKSHOP: DOCTORS IN THE KITCHEN: THE ART AND SCIENCE OF COOKING AS MEDICINE

Speakers: Drs. Robert Graham & Colin Zhu
Description: Michael Pollan reminds us, “The most important thing you can do with your health is cook. Cooking is more powerful than any medication.” In this interactive culinary workshop, we will explore the art and science of cooking and learn how to cook for better health!

Learning Objectives:
1. Define Culinary Medicine, a culinary/food revolution occurring within medicine.
2. Review the science of how cooking is good for our health and describe how we can advocate, inspire, and teach ourselves how to cook and translate this knowledge to our patients.
3. Discuss the seasonal autumn recipes and beneficial ingredients, and demonstrate simple techniques for selecting and cooking tasty, nutritious plant-based meals.
4. Cook plant-based recipes together focusing on local, sustainable and seasonal fare.

Dr. Robert Graham
Robert Graham, MD, MPH, ABOIM, FACP is board certified in Internal and Integrative Medicine. In 2010, he developed Farewellness, a mindful culinary medicine program educating doctors about healthy cooking and eating and created the “Victory Greens,” an edible rooftop garden at Lenox Hill Hospital. Dr. Graham received his medical degree from the School of Medicine at Stony Brook University Medical Center and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Lenox Hospital. He received a Masters of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health while completing three fellowships in General Internal Medicine, Complementary and Integrative Medical Therapies and Medical Education at Harvard Medical School. He is a frequent speaker at conferences including TedxManhattan (2015). He is the co-founder of FRESH MED NYC, an innovative medical model where he is incorporating his roots in integrative and traditional medicine into our modern healthcare system with an emphasis on having greater respect for Food, Relaxation, Exercise, Sleep and Happiness, now that’s F.R.E.S.H.

Dr. Colin Zhu
Colin has never regarded himself as “traditional” in the sense that he likes to look at things from all angles and perspectives. Having been trained in Family Practice, it has taught him the foundation of patient care. Osteopathy heightened his sense of connection with patients’ ailments. The culinary arts and health coaching elevated his palate for empowering people’s lives, not just maintaining their diagnoses.
Colin currently is a traveling doctor, assisting domestically and internationally with hopes of one day creating a platform for wellness/lifestyle education.
